Percnon sp. - Sally Lightfoot Crab
The Percnon sp., also known as the Algae-Eating Rock Crab, is an extremely useful addition to marine aquariums. Originally found in the tropical Atlantic and the Mediterranean, it is highly valued for its efficiency in controlling algae as well as for its fascinating appearance.
Characteristics:
Size: Carapace up to approx. 3–4 cm, leg span exceeding 10 cm
Appearance: Flat, rounded carapace in brownish-olive tones; long, banded legs and strong claws
Activity: Mostly active at dusk and during the night, often hiding during the day
Care in the Aquarium:
Tank size: from approx. 100 liters (26 gallons)
Diet: Specialized algae grazer – primarily consumes filamentous and turf algae, occasionally accepts leftover food
Compatibility: Generally peaceful as long as sufficient algae are available; can be kept in groups in larger tanks
