Echinopora is a genus of stony corals and belongs to the Large Polyp Scleractinia (LPS). They belong to the family Merulinidae. Echinopora is often counted, together with morphologically similar corals, to the chalices for simplicity, because exact identification is very difficult. The dominant growth form is plate-like or encrusting the substrate, however, there are also branching colony forms. A common, easy to keep species is Echinopora lamellosa, which is very thin and can be broken with bare hands, and thus can be easily traded privately as frags. Echinopora need little flow, but varied so that sediment does not build up on the tissue. They require little light and can withstand increased nutrient levels, or even need them for good growth.
