In the case of small to medium pool volumes, the water temperature can be heated with separate heating rods and cooled with fan batteries by 1-2 degrees °C via the evaporation cold (depending on the room temperature). Here, however, both components must work together optimally and be coordinated with one another. For tanks with a volume bigger than 100 liters, it is sensible to use chillers which combine the tasks of heating and cooling and keep the water temperature stable at an ideal level of 23-26 °C.
For reef tank volumes of more than 800 liters, cooling using an evaporative cooling system using a fan battery is usually no longer sufficient to prevent the temperature from rising above 28 °C (depending on the location and the options for room air conditioning). To ensure that the water temperature remains stable even in particularly hot seasons, a separate cooling circuit with the help of chillers must increasingly be considered for a pool volume of more than 800 liters.
When choosing a suitable chiller, factors such as the amount of water flow (L / h) with a view to the tank volume, the sensitivity of the adjustable temperature intervals, the power consumption and the noise level of the device play a role.
