Paracorynactis is a genus of mushroom anemones - yes, correct, the animal belongs to Corallimorpharia. It is not a classic sea anemone (Actiniaria). The species is monotypic with Paracorynactis hoplites as the only species. It lives solitary and does not form colonies. Its size is extremely variable from 2 mm to 21 cm. The most striking feature is the spherical tentacle tips, which is why the species is also known as a ball anemone. Surprisingly, it is a predator specialized on echinoderms such as sea urchins and starfish, and with good hunting success. Even the dreaded crown of thorns (Acanthaster planci) and other prey poisonous to other predators is eaten. The animals are azooxanthellate and are said to accept substitute food in addition to echinoderms.
