Algae reactors are biological filters for reducing nutrients that are connected to the water cycle and can be operated both inside and outside the technical sump. There are cultivated macroalgae in the reactor. Algae from the family of red algae such as Gracilaria curtissiae or Chaetomorpha linum) are best suited, which through their growth reduce excess nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate in the water. LED lighting inside the reactors is used for growth. In order to permanently remove the absorbed nutrients, the algae must be regularly removed (harvested) from the reactor and disposed of.
Valuable zooplankton and small crustaceans such as copepods can multiply in the reactor like in a refuge. These are suitable as a natural source of food for fish.
The algae reactors of the individual manufacturers such as Grotech, Pax Bellum, Pacific Sun (Pro S/M/L) or TUNZE differ in their flow rate, light output and size. With some manufacturers the pump is included directly, with other devices the pump has to be purchased separately. The respective flow rate and size of the algae reactor must be matched to the tank volume.
