Hydnophora is a genus of large polyp stony corals. Due to their structure, with bumpy grooves, they are also called pimple corals. Especially the two species Hydnophora exesa and Hydnophora rigida are common in marine aquaristics, but there are also other coral species like Hydnophora bonsai, Hydnophora grandis, Hydnophora microconos or Hydnophora pilosa.
The growth form of frags varies depending on species and location between protruding plates, rough boulders or branching trees. It should be noted that they have a strong sting and can develop long fighting tentacles, so spacing to other corals is important. Like other LPS, Hydnophora stony corals are not very demanding on the water quality, which makes them easy to keep for beginners. They are easy to propagate - just break off or cut them - and in growth they resemble SPS in shape, which makes them interesting to keep. The dominant coloration is gray to green.
