Efflatounaria is a soft coral genus from the Xeniidae family. It is characterized by a flat base with several upright branches that show a distinct polyp pattern. The differentiation from other tree soft corals and other Xenia relatives like Cespitularia is not easy. For an exact determination, the skeletal needles (sclerites) would have to be examined microscopically, which is only possible with dead specimens.
As with other Xeniidae, an adequate supply of iodine and halogens should be helpful in keeping them in a marine aquarium, and care should be taken with activated carbon and other substances that might adsorb them.
