Angel fish are considered to be the most popular fish for marine aquarium. Earlier they were regarded as the sub-family of butterfly fish since basically they are similar animals. Today one knows a lot of differences between angel-and butterfly fish – yet we present them in single category on our online shop. Out of more than 85 species of the angel fish, the dwarf angel fish centropyge and paracentropyge, the actually big angel fish and the regal angel fish are those which are especially kept very often in the aquarium.

In aquarium it must be considered that the tanks are sufficiently large enough. In case of dwarf angel fish we recommend an aquarium size of at least 350l-500l. The tanks should be very well structured. Butterfly fish reach a size between 12cm-20cm and thus have similar requirements for aquarium size. However they are very good swimmers, so the tank size with Chelmon rostratus in any case should not be less than 500l. Angel fish

Angel fish live in the reefs of Indian –and Pacific ocean and build strong territories which they defend against conspecifics. So the young angel fish have a completely different colour in the juvenile stage: They are not frightened away by their own parents from the territory. Most of the angel fish live together in pairs or small harem groups which consists of a male and several females.

Feeding and nutrition of angel fish

Angel fish feed mainly on algae and small animals. Dwarf angel fish gladly feeds on zooplankton like Mysis or Artemia, however green feed like algae etc. should be fed regularly to them. Dwarf angel fish and angel fish can attack the corals but there are many examples which show that the corals do not even touch them.

Feed butterfly fish and Chelmon rostratus

Butterfly fish are demanding with regards to food. The known Chelmon rostratus forceps fish is especially used against aiptasia plague. However it depends on the individual animal whether it kills the aiptasia plague or not. However the butterfly fish and forceps fish can attack corals, tubeworms or clams. It proves to be an advantage if the tanks has a stand time of few months. So it is ensured that there are enough naturally existing zooplankton which the fish can feed on during the sometimes sensitive familiarization. Naturally you can feed zooplankton by regular addition of NYOS Instant Plankton.
