Causes of fish diseases in seawater tanks can often be traced back to stress, caused by incorrect stocking, overfeeding (oversupply of nutrients) or poor filtering, which ultimately lead to an increased concentration of waste products. Bacteria that decompose excess waste products and release phenols into the environment, for example, color the aquarium water yellow. An unfavorable environment due to poor water hygiene in turn causes stress and weakens the immune system of the fish (see also water clarifiers and problem solvers). Indications such as a whitish cloudiness, which indicate an increased concentration of bacteria or, to name just a few, a large number of small copepods, substrate eaters, which worsen the biological equilibrium at the bottom of the aquarium by metabolizing the dirt particles.
For example, fish in the seawater tank are also exposed to viral infections, lymphocystis and bacterial infections. While the virus infections have not yet been extensively researched, lymphocystis infects the skin and fin tissues (white dots preferably in butterfly fish, angel fish). Dark brown to rust-red discolorations are always an indication of local bacterial infections and are often treated with a broad spectrum antibiotic.
In the event of anomalies of this or a similar type, there is definitely a need for action and you should contact a marine biologist you trust in order to discuss the exact treatment strategy and medication.
Overall, the range of appearances and causes is far greater than the possibilities mentioned (see also velvet disease, worm infestation, parasites, fungi, etc.).
