product description
Astropyga radiata - Blue-Spotted Urchin
The Blue-Spotted Urchin (Astropyga radiata - also Red Urchin, Fire Urchin, False Fire Urchin) is a magnificient and colorful sea urchin species. However, the grow large - up to 20 cm for their body and 45 cm incl. spines - and need a large aquarium of at least 800l - from the start, as they are fast growers. The size alone calls them being reefsafe into question, as they can easily knock down unglued coral, etc. And they are also said to sometimes show culinary interest in some kinds of coral. So they are only suitable for reef tanks with caution. They mainly feed on algae, but also detritus and carrion, which means they will readily take substitute foods, too.
