product description
Amphiprion ocellaris - False Clownfish
The False Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) is extremely popular in marine aquariums, and this popularity predates the Disney movie "Finding Nemo" (which earned it the nickname "Nemo fish").
Their behavior is highly interesting—Clownfish live in symbiosis with various anemone species, inhabiting them as pairs or groups. While solitary keeping is possible, it deprives them of a significant range of behaviors. The clownfish's skin secretes a substance that protects it from the nematocysts of the anemone.
For Amphiprion ocellaris, the natural symbiotic anemones are the Carpet Anemones (Stichodactyla gigantea and Stichodactyla mertensi) and the Magnificent Sea Anemone (Heteractis magnifica). Alternatively, other species like the Copperband Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor), Leather Anemone (Heteractis crispa), and Long Tentacle Anemone (Macrodactyla doreensis) are accepted, as they are smaller and more suitable for aquarium keeping.
False Clownfish are also known to accept other corals such as Euphyllia, Goniopora, Mushroom Corals (Sarcophyton), or Disc Anemones (Rhodactis) as hosts, although these corals may be damaged by the fish.
If the clownfish does not enter the anemone, one can try confining both together under a bowl for a few hours. Releasing the fish near the anemone upon introduction may also help. Patience is key, as the fish will eventually choose a host anemone.
Keeping Amphiprion ocellaris is entirely uncomplicated. The fish readily accept any food, and astaxanthin-rich granulated or frozen food like Calanus is recommended to enhance their orange color. These fish rarely get sick and are suitable for beginners. Due to the space requirements of the host anemone, a tank size of at least 100 liters is recommended.
Breeding Clownfish is straightforward, with various breeding forms now available. Even our Amphiprion ocellaris are from German breeding. The fish are highly robust and typically attain sizes of S-M.
