How to make coral frag plugs for your reef aquarium?

For many of you it is a every day problem: The corals in the aquarium, especially tall-growing SPS like Acropora, grow good and fast and the aquarium is getting full. And at some point, it is the time for a proper cutback of your corals and soon you ask yourself where to put your coral frags.
In order to breed corals - whether in a sump or even a separate frag tank - we recommend to plant them on frag stones!
Buy frag plugs and stones online or do it yourself?
We offer handmade frag stones in our online store, but you can also do them yourself with some effort. Here comes a guide:
1. Portland cement type I (white)
We use Portland cement type I in white color as a basis for our frag plugs
2. Aragonite sand mix (3-30 mm)
We use coral sand / mixed fracture in a size between 3mm-30mm.
3. Make a liquid mixture of cement and water.
The Portland cement will be mixed very fluid.
4. Add a generous amount of sand.
Then we add the coral sand and mix it. It is sufficient if the sand is covered with a thin film of cement
5. Arrange small heaps on a plastic sheet and add a depression at the top for the coral frags.
The cement-sand mixture is now placed on a plastic wrap. A finger-wide indendation in the middle later provides support for our coral frags.
6. Leave to dry for at least 24 hours.
Ideally, soak them in freshwater for several days with daily water changes.
We hope that you are soon a very successful fragger and exchange. If you want it more convenient, order our handmade frag plugs in our shop!
Happy fragging!
