product description
Opistognathus randalli - Black Cap Jawfisch
The Opistognathus randalli, commonly known as the Randall’s Jawfish, is a fascinating and peaceful bottom-dwelling species native to the Indo-Pacific. It inhabits sandy and rubble reef areas at depths of 10 to 40 meters and is well known for its characteristic burrow-building behavior. With its curious personality and distinctive appearance, it is a favorite among marine aquarists who appreciate natural behaviors and unique character fish.
The Randall’s Jawfish has an elongated, slender body and a large, expressive head with a wide mouth that it uses both for excavation and defense. Its coloration is pale yellow to cream, decorated with fine spots and bluish hues on the head and fins. The fish’s large, inquisitive eyes are one of its most endearing features, often seen peeking out from the entrance of its self-built burrow – a behavior that inspired its German name, “Brunnenbauer” (well builder).
Opistognathus randalli is best known for its burrow-building behavior. Using its mouth and fins, it collects small pieces of rubble and sand to construct and maintain a stable burrow, which it regularly reinforces and modifies. The fish spends most of its time near this structure, retreating swiftly inside when threatened. A fine sandy substrate mixed with coral rubble is essential for its natural behavior.
This species remains small, reaching only about 10–12 cm, and is well suited for aquariums of 200 liters or larger. It is very peaceful and should not be housed with aggressive or overly active species. A calm reef tank with sandy substrate, rock structures, and hiding spots provides the ideal environment. Opistognathus randalli feeds on fine frozen and live foods such as mysis, artemia, and krill, and can adapt to granulated diets over time.
