SPS – Stylophora, Seriatopora & Pocillopora: Fast-Growing SPS Corals
Stylophora, Seriatopora and Pocillopora are among the most popular SPS corals in the reef aquarium hobby. Their vibrant colors, branching structures and rapid growth add movement, shape and energy to any reef tank. Hardy and colorful, they are ideal for advanced reefkeepers and SPS lovers.
Stylophora – compact & colorful
Stylophora, also known as Cat’s Paw Coral, forms dense colonies with thick finger-like branches. It thrives under strong lighting and turbulent flow, ensuring optimal polyp extension and coloration. Stylophora is available in vibrant pinks, purples, greens and yellows. It is relatively easy to care for but sensitive to sudden changes in calcium and alkalinity levels.
Seriatopora – delicate & fast-growing
Seriatopora (Bird’s Nest Coral) grows in fine, mesh-like branches. It prefers strong light and strong, variable flow to support healthy polyp movement. Available in pink, green and purple varieties, it grows quickly into compact colonies. Though hardy, it reacts to fluctuations in water quality, particularly nitrate and phosphate levels.
Pocillopora – bushy & adaptive
Pocillopora (Cauliflower Coral) features dense, tufted branches with tightly packed polyps. It thrives in high light and chaotic flow, and comes in vivid pinks, greens and browns. Pocillopora is easy to keep and highly adaptive, but known for releasing spores that may settle elsewhere in the tank.
Care Guide & Differences
Stylophora grows thick, compact branches,
Seriatopora forms delicate, mesh-like structures,
Pocillopora grows in dense tufts and can propagate through spawning.
All three require high light, strong water flow, and stable water parameters (Ca, Mg, KH) to maintain health and color. They respond sensitively to changes, so consistent testing and flow are key.
