Montipora, Anacropora and Porites are among the best-known SPS (Small Polyp Stony) corals in marine aquaristics. With fine polyps, diverse growth forms and intense coloration, they add visual depth and vibrancy to any reef setup. Due to their differing care needs, they are suited to both advanced reefers and experienced SPS enthusiasts.
Montipora – the versatile beauty
Montipora grows in plating, branching or encrusting forms. It thrives under strong lighting and variable flow to optimize nutrient uptake. Available in vivid reds, blues, greens, and oranges, Montipora is a true showstopper. Stable calcium, magnesium and alkalinity are key to maintaining color and growth.
Anacropora – fine-structured & fast-growing
Anacropora is less common but highly attractive due to its delicate branches and fine polyps. It prefers moderate to strong lighting and gentle-to-moderate flow. Its rapid growth forms tree-like colonies. A stable alkalinity and trace element supplementation are essential for success.
Porites – hardy & beginner-friendly
Porites is a robust SPS coral with a dense encrusting structure and tiny polyps. Thriving in strong light and flow, it's ideal for beginners and seasoned reefers alike. It comes in vibrant yellows, greens and browns, and often hosts sponges or worms in symbiosis – a unique highlight in any reef.
Differences & care tips
Montipora is colorful and varied, Anacropora is delicate and demanding, while Porites is resilient and easy to care for. All thrive under high light, strong flow and stable conditions – especially calcium, magnesium and alkalinity are crucial.
