Corals

Favia, Favites, and Platygyra are among the most popular LPS corals (Large Polyp Stony Corals) in marine aquaristics. They are known for their plate-like colonies and honeycomb patterns, which add unique structure and color depth to any reef aquarium. Their hardy nature and relatively easy care requirements make them ideal for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
Favia
Favia, also known as Moon Coral, stands out with its round, honeycomb-like polyps that glow in vibrant colors such as green, blue, red, and yellow. It prefers moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow, which softly moves its polyps. Favia is relatively easy to care for and only needs occasional fine particulate food to support its growth, as it gains most of its energy through photosynthesis. Due to its aggressive stinging capabilities, it should be placed with sufficient distance from other corals.
Favites
Favites resembles Favia in its plate-like structure but has closely packed polyps, creating a denser, honeycomb-like surface. It prefers moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow. Favites is low-maintenance and adaptable to different water conditions but occasionally benefits from plankton or micro-particles for optimal nourishment. Because of its long sweeper tentacles and strong stinging ability, it should not be placed near sensitive corals.
Platygyra
Platygyra, commonly known as Maze Brain Coral, is distinguished by its wavy grooves and maze-like patterns that resemble a brain. It prefers moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow to protect its delicate polyps. Platygyra is relatively easy to maintain and only requires occasional fine plankton or micro-particles to grow healthily. It is adaptable and well-suited for shady areas within the reef aquarium.
Differences and Care Tips
Although Favia, Favites, and Platygyra share similar growth forms and patterns, they differ in their polyp arrangement:
- Favia has separate polyps with clearly defined borders.
- Favites features closely packed polyps, forming a denser structure.
- Platygyra is characterized by wavy grooves and maze-like patterns.
All three species benefit from stable water parameters, particularly calcium and magnesium, to grow healthily and retain their vibrant colors. Due to their aggressive stinging abilities, they should be placed at a safe distance from sensitive corals.
Favia, Favites, and Platygyra are versatile LPS corals known for their plate-like colonies, honeycomb patterns, and vibrant colors. They offer diverse scaping possibilities and exciting challenges for both beginners and experienced aquarists. With their hardy nature and unique patterns, they enhance any reef aquarium and create a fascinating underwater landscape.
