Corals

Goniopora and Alveopora are very colorful LPS corals (Large Polyp Stony Corals) that bring a unique movement and burst of color to any reef aquarium with their flower-like polyps. Their long, delicate tentacles create the appearance of floating blossoms, adding dynamic beauty to the underwater landscape. Despite their similar appearance, they have different care requirements, offering exciting challenges for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
Goniopora
Goniopora, commonly known as Flowerpot Coral, is renowned for its long, flower-like tentacles that gracefully sway in gentle water flow. It prefers moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow to softly move its sensitive polyps. Goniopora requires targeted feeding with plankton, micro-particles, and amino acids to maintain its vibrant colors and support healthy growth. It is more demanding in care and sensitive to changes in water parameters, especially fluctuations in calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity.
Alveopora
Alveopora closely resembles Goniopora in appearance but has shorter and thicker tentacles with flower-shaped tips. It prefers moderate lighting and gentle water flow. Compared to Goniopora, Alveopora is easier to care for and more adaptable to different water conditions. It gains most of its energy through photosynthesis but benefits from occasional feeding with fine plankton or liquid food. Alveopora grows relatively quickly, making it an excellent choice for beginners looking to enhance their reefscape with vibrant colors and flowing movement.
Differences and Care Tips
Although Goniopora and Alveopora look similar, they can be distinguished by the number of tentacle tips: Alveopora has 12 tentacle tips per polyp, while Goniopora has 24 tentacle tips. Both species benefit from stable water parameters and targeted feeding but should be placed with sufficient distance from other corals to avoid conflicts due to their long tentacles.
Goniopora and Alveopora are stunning flower corals for marine aquariums, bringing blossom-like polyps and graceful movements that create a unique dynamic. While Goniopora is more demanding and requires targeted feeding, Alveopora is more adaptable, making it perfect for beginners. Both species are breathtaking eye-catchers and an enchanting addition to any reef aquarium.
