product description
Koumansetta hectori - Hector´s Goby
The Koumansetta hectori, commonly known as Hector’s Goby, is a small, peaceful goby species native to the Indo-Pacific. It inhabits sandy and algae-covered reef zones in shallow lagoons and coastal areas. Because of its calm behavior, small size, and beneficial algae-grazing habits, it is an excellent choice for nano and smaller reef aquariums.
Koumansetta hectori is easily recognized by its distinctive black and yellow horizontal stripes running along the entire body. Its slender form and delicate fins give it a subtle yet elegant appearance. Reaching only about 5 to 6 cm in length, this species remains very small and displays a calm, shy temperament. It usually hovers near the substrate, grazing on algae and microorganisms.
Like its close relative Koumansetta rainfordi, the Hector’s Goby is primarily an algae grazer, helping to maintain natural balance in the aquarium. It continuously picks at film algae, diatoms, and microfauna from rocks and sand. A fine sandy substrate is recommended, as it may sift through it for food or partially bury itself. Over time, it will also accept fine frozen and granulated foods.
This species is very peaceful and does well with other small, calm tankmates. Because it feeds slowly and gently, it should not be housed with aggressive or fast-feeding fish. Koumansetta hectori prefers mature aquariums with stable water parameters and natural algae growth.
