CALCINUS LAEVIMANUS - HERMIT CRAB
Hermit crabs (Calcinus laevimus) are easy to care for and an indispensable members of the Cleaning Crew in every sea-water aquarium. They nibble on stones and sand, block the algae growth while doing so and eat dead animals and food rests before they can pollute the water.
The crabs are about 3-5 cm in size and need a tank with at least 10 litres. The prominent white claw is used to seal their snail shell - so enough extra shells as housing should always be present, regardless of whether they originate from land or water snails. For effective cleaning, the animals should be always kept in groups (about one crab per 10 litres). Towards other animals Calcinus laevimus behave peacefully.
Hermit Crabs and snails should be introduced around two weeks after starting the aquarium - usually the beginning of the green algae phase.
