Mespilia globulus - Kugel-Seeigel
Mespilia globulus, commonly known as the Blue Tuxedo Urchin or simply Blue Urchin, is a peaceful and highly popular species among reef aquarists. Its deep blue to violet coloration with dark bands gives it a striking and elegant appearance. As it moves across rocks and substrate, it often decorates itself with small pieces of algae or shells for camouflage.
- Origin: Indo-Pacific – from East Africa to the western Pacific
- Maximum size: up to approx. 8 cm in diameter
- Temperature: 24–27 °C (75–81 °F)
- Diet: Algae, detritus, and surface growth
- Behavior: Peaceful, mainly nocturnal, constantly grazing
- Special feature: Efficiently removes algae from rocks and substrate. One of the best algae eater we know.
- Minimum tank size: From 150 L (approx. 40 gal)
