Valenciennea longipinnis - Long-finned Goby
Valenciennea longipinnis – Longfin Sleeper Goby
The Valenciennea longipinnis, commonly known as the Longfin Sleeper Goby, is an elegant and beneficial goby species, easily recognized by its elongated fins and distinctive head pattern featuring a dark eye stripe. Its body is usually whitish to silvery, providing a striking contrast to the long, graceful fins. Aside from its beauty, this goby is highly valued for its practical role in keeping the substrate clean.
In the wild, these gobies are usually found in pairs, sifting through sandy bottoms near reef areas in search of small food particles. In aquariums, they perform the same task, constantly aerating and cleaning the sand. A pair can be kept together if the tank offers enough space and hiding places. Since they are active sand sifters, a sufficiently deep sandy substrate is essential.
Care requirements:
- Minimum tank size: 300 liters (80 gallons)
- Temperature: 24 – 26 °C (75 – 79 °F)
- Diet: Frozen foods (Mysis, Artemia), live food, fine pellets and flakes
- Behavior: Peaceful, best kept as a pair
The Longfin Sleeper Goby is both a useful and attractive addition to the marine aquarium, combining elegance with a natural cleaning function that benefits the entire system.
