product description
Cirripectes castaneus - Chestnut Eyelash-blenny
The Chestnut Blenny (Cirripectes castaneus) belongs to the blenny family (Blenniidae) and is native to the Indo-Pacific region. With its subtle brownish coloration and active behavior, it is a useful and interesting inhabitant for reef aquariums. It is especially valued for its role as an algae grazer.
- Origin and Natural Habitat
Cirripectes castaneus inhabits shallow coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific. It is commonly found on reef rocks and coral structures, where it moves across surfaces grazing on algae and biofilm. - Aquarium Care
This blenny is well suited for reef aquariums and requires sufficient live rock with natural algae growth. Plenty of perching spots and hiding places within the aquascape are important. It is hardy and adaptable, but relies on a consistent natural food source. - Feeding
Cirripectes castaneus primarily feeds on algae and biofilm. In aquariums it consumes algae growth, spirulina-based foods, and other plant-based diets. Supplemental feeding may be necessary if natural algae is limited. - Tank Mates
The Chestnut Blenny is generally peaceful but may show territorial behavior toward conspecifics or similar-shaped fish. It is usually compatible with most other reef inhabitants. - Aquarium Size
An aquarium of at least 100 liters (about 25 gallons) is recommended, providing sufficient rockwork and natural algae growth. - Special Features
This species is an efficient algae grazer and helps control unwanted algae growth in the aquarium. It typically perches on rocks and makes short movements across the reef while feeding.
