product description
Cirripectes auritus - Eared-Blenny
The Eared Blenny (Cirripectes auritus) is a rarely kept but highly interesting reef aquarium inhabitant. Its most distinctive feature is the noticeable skin flaps (“ears”) located behind the eyes, which give the species its common name. With a reddish-brown base color and fine patterning, it blends harmoniously into the reefscape while displaying lively and curious behavior. It grows to a size of about 10–12 cm.
Origin and Habitat:
This species is distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific, inhabiting shallow reef zones rich in algae growth. Here, it uses rocks, coral crevices, and reef structures both as shelter and feeding grounds.
Care in the Aquarium:
Cirripectes auritus thrives in aquariums of 250 liters or more, ideally with plenty of live rock that provides both hiding spots and algal growth. It is generally peaceful but may show territorial behavior toward conspecifics or similar-looking species.
Diet:
In the wild, the Eared Blenny feeds mainly on algae and biofilm. In the aquarium, it accepts plant-based foods such as nori, spirulina, and specialized herbivore diets, supplemented with frozen foods like mysis or artemia. A varied diet ensures good health and vitality.
Key Features:
Distinctive “ear-like” skin flaps behind the eyes
Active and curious behavior
Important algae grazer, helping with natural algae control
Compact size of around 10–12 cm
