The Tobacco Basslet (Serranus tortugarum) is a small and attractive serranid species found throughout the Western Atlantic, including Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. It displays a beige to yellowish body with distinctive dark horizontal stripes and subtle blue accents. With a maximum length of around 8–10 cm, it is one of the smaller basslets and is well suited to medium-sized marine aquariums.
This species is peaceful for a serranid and generally tolerates other fish well, although it may show territorial behaviour toward conspecifics or very small fish. It prefers rock structures, caves, and ledges where it can retreat and observe its surroundings. In a stable reef aquarium, it adapts easily and becomes a confident, active inhabitant.
