Duncanopsammia axifuga, the whisker coral or "Duncan" coral is the only coral species of the monotypic genus Duncanopsammia. It has zooxanthellae and can feed purely on light, but will readily accept supplemental food. It is a robust large polyp stony coral (LPS), which is also excellent for beginners. Popular are colorations with bright green trunk, which also needs to get some light to color up.
Lighting can be weak to moderate. It is closely related to the azooxanthell corals of the Tubastraea genus. The species is not so common in nature and is often traded with prices per polyp. Growth is slow in typical LPS fashion, but fast enough that one still notices the growth.
