General aspects – Comline DOC skimmer
The model series of the Comline DOC skimmers has been developed especially for an effective and modern protein skimming process in marine biotopes from 200 to 2,100 litres (52 to 554 USgal.). The units stand out for their compact dimensions, but at the same time they have a large foam cup capacity and offer a very high performance on account of their air volume and water throughput. Easily and inconspicuously they can be placed directly in the aquarium at an immersion depth of 240 to 290 mm (9.4 to 11.4 in.) using a magnet holder. The inlet of aquarium water can be set to between 5 per cent and 90 percent. They can also be used in aquarium cabinets with variable levels from 100 to 280 mm (3.9 to 11 in.). In this mode, the accessories are used to generate a constant internal water level; in this case the water circulates with an inlet of 100 percent of aquarium water. The cartridge core on the outlet pipe ensures bubble-free outgoing water. Every cleaning of the skimmer cup leads to the reactor being cleaned at the same time, and thus a very constant and efficient foam production is ensured.
In the skimmer, the TUNZE® Hydrofoamer produces a large quantity of a mixture of 50 percent of water and 50 per cent of fine air bubbles. Each air bubble has an active surface which binds the electrically charged DOCs (Dissolved Organic Carbons). The air water mixture is immediately transported into the middle reactor area, producing a dense foamy mass. The upper zone of the reactor is used to settle this foamy mass laden with protein, which is then removed into a special foam cup or into the foam collection pipe. The purified water returns into the aquarium without bubbles or into the filter. By means of a special nipple, ozone can be passed into the system, thus improving the skimming process and at the same time removing any yellowing matter in the aquarium water. It can be observed that when air bubbles are produced proteins are absorbed immediately. In practice it can be observed that the absorbed matter is torn off the air bubbles again by skimmers with a high construction. For this reason, all TUNZE®DOC skimmers have very short reactors with a high air output.
